Here below you can read about some of the
many monuments in Vienna. The city has several art museums and parks:
SCHÖNBRUNN PALACE:
this is the summer residence of the imperial family. It's built in a baroque
style and it also contains a park, the Palm House and a zoo. Emperor Franz
Joseph was born here in 1830 and today the palace is listed on the UNESCO's
cultural heritage list;
IMPERIAL PALACE - Hofburg: the Imperial family lived in this palace until 1918 and the palace was
originally a castle that was built in the 13th century. Today you can visit
the private apartments of the Habsburg family. Nowadays, the palace also
holds the office of the President of Austria;
ST. STEPHEN'S CATHEDRAL: this is the most famous Gothic cathedral in Austria. Without seeing this
cathedral your visit to Vienna will be incomplete. Inside you can admire
lots of art treasures as for example the altar that is spectacular. There's
a Gothic winged altar here from the 1447. Inside the cathedral you can also
find the tomb of Prince Eugene of Savoy, who died in 1754;
SPANISH RIDING SCHOOL: you can see a live performance with the Lipizzan horses from the Spanish
riding school. This is the only institute in the world that has preserved
the classic equestrian skills (haute école) that still practises this
technique. The beautiful shows take place inside a riding hal. There is also
a museum where you can learn more about the history of the riding school;
THE SECESSION:
this is one of the most famous art nouveau buildings in Vienna. It was built
around 1900. Above the entrance door you can read the words: "To the Age its
Art- to Art its Freedom". Several famous painters, architects and designers
have worked here as for example Klimt and Schiele;
MUSICIAN'S MEMORIALS:
in Vienna many of the world famous musicians have lived and here they have
also created some of their master pieces. You can visit museums and learn
more about; Beethoven, Hayd, Strauss, Schubert and of course Mozart. At the
musician's memorials you can see furniture and objects that once belonged to
these composers;
FERRIS WHEEL:
this large wheel was raised in 1897 and it was done so to celebrate the 50th
anniversary of the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph. The name for this
well-known wheel in German is Riesenrad. The construction burnt down during
the second World War but was rebuilt after the war.
